The corpse lay above the tide mark - as if thrown there by a mighty wave - thin, but strong and virile in life, and eerily handsome even in death. His eyes were closed and, strange as it may seem, it seemed that he was only sleeping. Scraps of seaweed hung from the sailor's clothes he wore.
The girl complied mechanically, and shivered when she felt his cold body. Then, when her lips touched hers, she screamed and backed away.
Fear? Excuse me, gentlemen, but you don't know the meaning of that word. Yes, I am firmly convinced of that. They are soldiers, adventurers. They withstood attacks by dragoon regiments and withstood the driving storms on the high seas. But the fear, the real fear that makes your hair stand on end and sends shivers down your spine, you don't know. I too have experienced such fear, but until the legions of darkness rise from Hell and the world is consumed in flames, no human will ever experience such fear again.
