Mariel might have stayed on her father's ship forever, at peace with her life of banishment at sea, but then she discovers a note in the water with her missing brother's name on it. To find him, Mariel must go on land where humans are hunted, imprisoned, and killed.

As she infiltrates Fae society in search of her brother, Mariel realizes her best chance is to team up with a Fae Captain that seems all too willing to trust her, despite his suspicions of her true identity.

Mariel quickly becomes entangled in the mess of a rebellion her brother left behind. Mariel must explore her capacity for deception, strength, and love if she can ever hope to get home with her brother before fate catches up to them.
