The papers published here include the proceedings of the second Medieval Dublin Symposium, held under the auspices of the Friends of Medieval Dublin in Trinity College, Dublin, in May 2000.

They comprise a balance of archaeological and historical studies: the first detailed report on the extensive excavations that took place at Dublin Castle during the 1980s (Ann Lynch and Conleth Manning; an analysis of the Viking Age banks and town walls unearthed at Ross Road, along with their Anglo-Norman replacements, (Claire Walsh); and the first published account of excavations at the site of the ancient church of St Michael le Pole (Barra O Donnabhain).

The historical papers include a study of the famous battle of Glenn Mama (Ailbhe Mac Shamhrain), an examiniation of the transition of Dublin from a Norse town to an English borough (James Lydon), the most detailed discussion to date of the annalistic materials that have survived from the medieval city (Bernadette Whelan), a biographical account of one of the medieval city's most colourful mayors, Geoffrey Morton (Philomena Connolly), and the first in-depth study of women in medieval Dublin (Jessica McMorrow).
