Electromagnetic Compatibility - Achieving Whole Life EMC - Management, Design And Compliance: Conference Proceedings, London, 18 Feb

This conference looked at the new techniques and technology which can be utilized to ensure that electromagnetic compatibility is incorporated in the design of products, with particular emphasis on maintaining their compatibility throughout their service life.

The presentations were given under various topic headings.

The papers under "EMC management" discusses whole-life management, EMC resources - are you managing?, and an automotive manufacturer's approach to EMC management. "Design solutions" covers EM transients - the new threat, traction versus telecommunications - a railway case history of EMC, improving the emissions and ESD immunity of a test instrument which uses DSP - a case study with whole-company conclusions, designing for radiated emissions/immunity performance, the EMC development of a disk storage system, and EMC upgrading. "Testing and compliance" deals with testing during development, anechoic chamber compliance to emission standards, and maintaining compliance with the EMC directive in production.

Presentations given by the four panel members during an open forum are provided as abstracts. The titles feature the situation regarding the transposition of the EMC directive into national laws - competent and notified bodies, the UK's regulations for compliance with the EC EMC directive, EMC (89/336/EEC), the draft automotive EMC directive, and EMC standards update.

Supplementary papers examine the technical and economical optimization of interference tests and the analysis of the risks regarding the design of interference-free apparatus and systems, fallacies and facts of power factor correction, proper circuit design for whole-life EMC, component-level susceptibility testing, automotive electronics and the EMC directive - an overview, and a concurrent engineering approach to EMC design.
