Using a sample of 289 leaders, 1835 subordinates, and 11,157 unique goals, we examined the relationship between charismatic leadership behaviors and goal attainment.

We specifically tested the effects of charismatic leadership on subordinate goal attainment under varying types of goals (difficulty and importance).

We also examined the impact of charismatic leadership on goal attainment across different leader genders and various dyad gender compositions.

Results indicated that charismatic leadership behaviors increased subordinate goal attainment to the greatest extent when leaders were male and goals were difficult.

We also found a positive effect for goal importance, such that goals were achieved at higher rates when they were important.

Contrary to expectations, gender dyad composition did not moderate the effects of charismatic leadership.
