The book depicts the tumultuous events of this fine female doctor who is faced with horrible, unprecedented discrimination and harassment in a hospital setting. She was young, enthusiastic about setting out in her career. She accepted a position at a Sacramento, California hospital. She was rough and ready in taking on this pursuit!
She was a very caring, diligent and a hard worker to begin with. She loved her patients.
She loved working at her hospital until she began to realize that her supervisor was subjecting her to extreme discrimination and harassment. A different, horrific kind of abuse and retaliation.
The book details how the discrimination and harassment was used in a horrific and dangerous way, threatening this young woman's health, medical career and life! A large part of the abuses came on as a result of cultural diversity where the boss was strongly staunch in his biases, handpicking staff doctors and colleagues who he believed shared his beliefs, cultural similarities e.g. choosing foreign doctors whom he could depend on for support.
And, in return, of course these doctors supported him as they were always receiving rewards in terms of lighter workloads, bonuses! Why should they complain??
The doctors were a good group but how could they allow themselves to be friendly with an American colleague, and female if their boss was humiliating her making her look like the oddball! They could say nothing!
The boss and management (1 person) used weaponry in the form of relentless criticism, ongoing and incessant peer reviews which involved having her explain herself in front of an audience of hospital employees, most of whom were working in other departments, many of whom did not have any medical knowledge. What humiliatiion she endured!
She was always being faced with questions about her sound decisions which were made. The truth be known that this supervisor, who was made chief of the dept was a fraud. The book details the fraud which creates the crime of the discrimination and
harassment.
Yet, this young doctor knew that she had to be perfect as she was dealing with a corrupt bunch of thugs who were deliberate, and could cause substantial retribution in terms of ruining her reputation and medical career.
In other words, she was being. " worked to death".
She did come to realize that her supervisor and management were working together. They did not like the fact that she began to speak up, describing to them what was going on. Noone wanted or cared to listen. This seemed to infuriate my supervisor more!
He actually seemed to hate her. There was evidence of his favoring the male physicians!
He did not think a woman was worthy of the big salary as he once screamed at her!!
Ultimately, even though she attempted to change the inequalities, the discrimination and harassment continued. She realized that the boss and management ( 1 person) were malicious and devious thugs, not really caring for the patients.
Of course the events impacted on her health, emotionally and physically. The book also covers the legal entanglements involving the Equal employment opportunity processes and how she was able to more successfully litigate the case by herself.
