An overview of recent research on labour and socialist movements before the First World War, focusing on six major countries: Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Britain and Russia.

Each chapter deals not only with pre-1914 labour movements but also with the everyday life experiences of the industrial working class.

The collection combines traditional labour history with an evaluation of the rich literature on 'people's history' which has grown up in recent years.
