An Assessment of the Potential Benefits of Additional Stratification of BBS Squares by Habitat and Accessibility to Enhance the Monitoring of Rare Species and Habitats

Every year approximately 3,000 volunteers across the UK take part int he BTO/RSPB/JNCC Breeding Bird Survey, recording breeding birds in randomly selected 1km squares to robustly monitor population trends of some 110 UK bird species.

Here we examine options for increasing coverage of rare species and of assemblages occupying certain habitats of interest within the BBS framework.
