The second edition of this textbook incorporates appropriate references to the National Literacy Strategy and to the National Curriculum for initial teacher education.

The book aims to help students and teachers create a rich environment for reading and develop a principled and secure understanding of the processes and practices involved so that they can bring and keep reading "under control".

The authors place the teaching of reading in a theoretical, political and historical framework and present a balanced coverage of all key issues.
