Protection of workers and the general public during development of contaminated land

Part of the Health and Safety Guidance series

The current scarcity of land means that construction and engineering work is increasingly carried out on sites which have been contaminated by previous industrial use - for example, old gas or chemical works.

Many of the contaminants pose health risks to the workers, and potentially to members of the public, unless safe procedures are put in place and maintained during the development phase.

This booklet, produced after wide consultation, addresses the hazards, which developers and contractors need to consider under the COSHH regulations and should be of interest to developers, local authorities, professional advisers, medical personnel, safety officers, and contractors and their employees.
