Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 - 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian Expressionist painter, whom many identify as the pioneer of expressionism in modern painting.

He quickly earned a reputation for belonging to a new artistic era in Germany and in central Europe, he is known for his works and his importance all around the world.

His most well-known works date from the 1890s, notably The Scream.

In his works, he explored the themes of love, fear, death, melancholia, and anxiety.
