Portrait of a Lady

Isabel Archer, the heroine of Henry James' classic novel, is considered by many to be one of the most brilliant fictional characters ever created. Independent and highly spirited, Isabel is an American heiress who resents the idea that women are something less than whole without a man, and wants to find personal fulfillment on her own.

On a trip to London, she fends off suitors right and left, but finds herself inexplicably drawn to the slippery charms of Gilbert Osmond, an unscrupulous, tyrannical dilettante. Osmond's affections aren't sincere, but they nevertheless force Isabel to make a tragic choice regarding her own destiny.
