While government and security forces have achieved successes against terrorism the overall effect has been containment rather than eradication.

Between 1970 and 1990 an estimated 40,000 terrorist incidents occurred worldwide and approximately one-third of these were against business enterprises.

The spend on security by companies has increased significantly in recent decades.

This trend is likely to be reinforced as more victims of terrorism affected by attacks against companies make use of their legal opportunities to seek financial redress from the companies involved, as in the case of Pan-Am.
