Synopsis:
John Peerybingle, a cart driver, lives with his young wife Dot, their son, and their nanny, Tilly Slowboy. A cricket sings in the home and acts as the family's guardian angel. One day, a mysterious old man visits them and stays with the Peerybingle for a few days.
The life of the Peerybingle family intersects with that of Caleb Plummer, a poor toymaker who works for the miser Mr. Tackleton. Caleb has a blind daughter named Bertha, and a son, Edward, who traveled to South America and is believed dead.
The miser Tackleton is about to marry Edward's crush May, but she doesn't love him. Tackleton tells John Peerybingle that his wife Dot is cheating on him, and shows him a clandestine scene in which Dot kisses the mysterious tenant. This man, who is in disguise, is actually a much younger man than he appears. John loves his wife deeply, and all this breaks his heart, but after reflection, he decides to release his wife from her marriage contract.
In the end, the mysterious tenant turns out to be Edward, who has come home in disguise. Dot shows that she has always been faithful to John. Edward marries May hours before her wedding to Tackleton takes place. The miser is captivated by the festive atmosphere (in a way reminiscent of Ebenezer Scrooge) and moved, hands May over to her true love.
