HIV-1 infection has become a subject of increasing interest for psychiatrists.

One source of interest is the fact that brain involvement represents a biological aspect of the infection and the disease; another the psychological impact of the notification of the infection and of the progression of the disease on affected individuals.

This dichotomy is reflected by the first two sections of the book, which cover "organic" and "psychogenic" mental disorders.

Attention is also paid to other mental disorders such as mood and acute psychotic disorders which can occur in HIV-seropositive subjects, and whose origins often remain unknown.
