Twelve year-old Rory Williams lives with his family and his dog, Rosie, on a farm in rural Wales.

Rory has the usual problems of a boy his age - he doesn't get enough pocket money, he has too many chores, his parents don't understand him, his younger brother and sister get all the attention while he gets all the trouble, and as for school.

On top of all this, Rory is suspicious that something is going on at home, which is confirmed in his mind when he talks to a girl with nits at the Nurse's Office at school.

He confides in his best friend, Harry, before they are pounced on by the Deputy Head, how he believes his parents are going to divorce, but when he confronts them, it's much worse than that.
