Into Phonics with Twisters

This Teachers' Handbook highlights some of the many possible teaching opportunities that can arise from the books in the Twisters series and makes links to the framework for Years 1 and 2.

The emphasis is on phonics and the eighteen copiable pages provide activities to support the teaching of blending for reading and segmenting words into their constituent phonemes for spelling.

The activities are compatible with the reading and spelling programme suggested in Letters and Sounds: Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics (Department of Education and Skills, 2007). The reading level of the books is likely to be appropriate for most Year 1 children but many Year 2 children will enjoy the books.

Notes are provided for working with both of these Year groups.
