The authors chose 30 of the world's most challenging gardeners in order to discover the secret of stylishness.

Alongside the photographs of gardens, many of which are not often open to the public, the gardeners explain the concept and development of their gardens and give advice on planting, maintenance and special features.

The gardens pictured here are from all over the world, including Brazil and Australia as well as Britain and America. Graham Rose is the Sunday Times gardening correspondent and co-presenter of the BBC's "Gardener's World".

He is the author of "The Low-Maintenance Garden". Peter King is the author of "A Viceroy's India" and "Travels with a Superior Person".
