Nitrates, the first efficacious therapy discovered for the treatment of ischemic heart disease, continue to be an important therapeutic modality in modern cardiovascular medicine.

Indications for nitrates have expanded over the past years and many different compounds are now available which offer alternative routes of administration and act effectively in a wide variety of cardiac conditions.
