Tolstoy s last major work was A Calendar of Wisdom, a collection of his favourite spiritual and philosophical quotations in the form of daily readings. Each week he included a story for Sunday, and Divine and Human represents this collection of Sunday readings from the Calendar.

This is a fascinating short story collection with a difference and uniquely it shows a very personal side of Tolstoy s work, as well as setting his fiction against the backdrop of Russian history, literature and legend.
