John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale star as Jonathan and Sara, two young people who meet by chance one Christmas in New York and spend a memorable evening wandering around the city together.

When they part at the end of the night, they decide to let fate take charge of their future and make no plans to meet again.

Years later, Jonathan is still living in New York, Sara has moved to San Francisco, and both are on the verge of getting married to other people.
