Mary Lemist Titcomb (1852-1932) grew up wanting to do something special.

The problem was, people were always telling her that she couldn't.

But Mary never gave up and soon found her life's work - to be a librarian.

Mary continually looked for ways to improve library work by making it both more efficient and wide-reaching.

As librarian at the Washington County Free Library in Maryland, Titcomb was concerned that the library was not reaching all the people it could.

She was determined that everyone should have access to the library - not just adults and those who lived in town.
