This is their story, the history of the Tennessee 31st / 39th Mounted Infantry Regiment.

They were from the western slopes of the Appalachians, rugged men, simple men, who valuedtheir freedom and independence and when that was threatened they fought for Dixie like no others.

They suffered greatly at Vicksburg, and in the final days of the war fought in their own hometowns against Sheridan andhis men as he plundered the Appalachians.

Their story has lain hidden and largely forgotten for 150 years, but now authors Glenn Stacy and John Rigdon have corroborated to tell their story, in this revised edition, a story of heroism, a story of bravery in the face of overwhelming odds and illness, a story of privations throughout their service, but a story that deserves to take its place alongside the other immortal heroes of the confederacy. Since the publication of Suffered Greatly By Privations, more information has been discovered and has been added to the narrative.

To aid the reader in understanding battle movements, maps have been incorporated into the story by the renowned map maker, Hal Jespersen.
