A brilliant and gripping fantasy centred on the relationship between a magician's apprentice and a djinni, with humorous undertones of satire.

The djinni Bartimaeus is summoned by a young apprentice, Nathaniel, and directed to steal the Amulet of Samarkand from the powerful magician, Simon Lovelace.

Lovelace has publicly insulted and humiliated the boy on a former occasion.

Bartimaeus succeeds in swiping the Amulet from Lovelace and Nathaniel directs him to hide it in his master's study - that of the magician, Arthur Underwood.

There is mounting antagonism between Nathaniel and Bartimaeus, the boy threatening the djinn with Perpetual Confinement at the bottom of the Thames unless he continues to serve him faithfully.

Bartimaeus has no choice but to obey and discovers that Lovelace committed murder in order to steal the Amulet in the first place and that he is at the centre of several government plots.

Bartimaeus is caught and taken to the Tower of London where he is interrogated by the Prime Minister and other members of the Government.

He manages to escape but Lovelace tracks down the Amulet to Underwood's house, siezes it and sets the house on fire.Nathaniel's master is burned to death.

A glitzy country house ball takes place attended by Nathaniel and Bartimaeus.

Lovelace appears wearing the Amulet which gives him total protection from all dangers.

All the great and the good of the government arrive but Lovelace has a plot - he summons a powerful demonic deity to destroy all his rivals.

Chaos ensures but the apprentice and the djinn save the day.

Nat wrenches the Amulet off Lovelace's neck and in reversing the summons, drives back the demonic djinn which takes Lovelace with it as it disappears.

Nat's career is off to a good start!
