Following an incident in the North Sea in which two divers showed signs of becoming anaesthetised following contamination of the diving bell internal environment, by volatile hyrdocarbons from condensate accidentally brought back to the bell, Unimed Scientific Limited was contracted to lead the development of a suitable monitoring device which would alert the divers to such a problem.

The project was funded by a consortium of companies and organizations concerned with the offshore oil industry.
