Stream reconnaissance is the geomorphological technique that provides a structure for field observation, interpretation and recording of river channel form and sedimentary features. This handbook is based upon work with the US Army to develop Stream Reconnaissance Record Sheets for use in the field.

The sheets are used to obtain the information required for the bank stability model: action of channel flow on the bed and bank, how the resulting erosion impacts the bank stability, where retreat will be located in future, and how local erosion processes are related to reach dynamics or to instability in the fluvial system.
