Summertime Blues : Dublin's Epic Journey to a Historic All-Ireland

See all formats and editions

Told through the experiences of a Dublin Gaelic football fan and of a number of the players from the team of the early 1990s, "Summertime Blues" is the story of the long, hot dry summer of Dublin's last All-Ireland winning season in 1995.

Through feelings of joy, terror, dread and hope, it brilliantly captures the rollercoaster of emotions experienced in every match.

From shouting at television screens to standing on terraces in the blazing sun, and from Navan to Washington DC and on to Croke Park, it paints a vibrant picture of the desperate search for tickets and the foul-mouthed, good-humoured banter which takes place between rival supporters.

Most of all, it recounts the sense of comradeship and anxiety among the fans as they sing, shout and roar for their team. "Summertime Blues" recounts how the Dublin team of the early '90s strove, ever more desperately, to win the Championship title that always seemed within their potential and yet was, until 1995, beyond their grasp. Set against the backdrop of the tentative beginnings of the Irish economic boom, it charts the story of that season, from Jason Sherlock's famous stocking-foot goal against Laois, through the epic Leinster final battle with Meath, to its climax in what was one of the most controversial and talked-about All-Ireland finals of modern times.
