This is one of a series of reports on the application of adaptive antennas to the next generation of mobile communications systems.

This project, "Technology in Smart Antennas from Universal Mobile Infrastructure" (TSUNAMI), funded under the European Commission's RACE programme, is being undertaken by a consortium of seven European organizations led by ERA.

This report contains the framework for a field trial.

After a compact review of the underlying adaptive antenna techniques, the verification of these concepts in a field trial is focused on, including: cellular and indoor situations where system-related issues are also discussed; transmitter and receiver structure; and the linearity of the up/down conversion of the signals.

The following are studied in theory and in the trial: high-frequency aspects, particularly the derivation of an appropriate propagation model and methods for the site characterization; signal processing aspects crucial to any adaptive antenna scheme; the utilization of a signal generation tool; the demonstration of new technologies in the field trial; and the simulation play, including various access schemes. Finally, the framework for the field trials is extensively discussed, including: the scenarios and expected results of the field trial; the selection of the site and the test plan; and a basic outline of the data analysis concept.
