This is one of a series of reports on the application of adaptive antennas to the next generation of mobile communications systems.

This project, "Technology in Smart Antennas from Universal Mobile Infrastructure" (TSUNAMI), funded under the European Commission's RACE programme, is being undertaken by a consortium of seven European organizations led by ERA.

This report describes the technology and material requirements implied by the use of AA as applied to UMTS.

After a brief description of the use of AAs, and their possible advantages, specific system aspects of application of AAs in GSM/DCS and DECT networks are outlined.

There is a brief description of application scenarios for TDMA and CDMA systems.

The requirements and constraints on various hardware modules and algorithms, including cellular design, technology and signal processing are analyzed.

Finally, performance evaluation methods, criteria and objectives are detailed, dealing separately with field trials, and simulation work.

The report considers only the radio interface aspects of UMTS.
