Fathers explores the relationship between father and child. Through history it is the mother who has been the sole image as the caregiver and loving parent. Fathers rediscovers the male as a guardian of the dependent child. The book tries to explore the essence of this close relationship between the father and his child.

Verena Winkelmann has in the years between 2009 and 2013 followed 73 fathers. The project resulted in almost 20 000 images. Fathers presents 21 of these photographs. Verena Winkelmann’s portraits remain not only a study of what it means to be a male and father in the 21st century, but also questions the male icon and the roles he is expected to adhere to. Without proposing answers, the book challenges views on gender equality and masculinity.
