Jonah dreams of a special companion to share adventures with and his vision is answered in the summer before he begins formal school. His family receive an early Christmas present in the shape of a free spirited puppy that they name Ralph. Against the backdrop of Jonah’s suburban home and the blue skies of a Western Australian summer, Jonah and Ralph become closely entwined through their joy of play and unrestrained adventure. When the reality of starting a new school looms closer, Jonah confronts dark shadows and nameless fears that threaten to entangle and trap him. As the Autumn skies darken, Ralph also battles restraints against his freedom and he recklessly pursues chances to run freely in the footsteps of his ancestors. Jonah and Ralph’s mystical connection deepens as they help each other face difficulty and it is their shared kindness and spirit of adventure that helps them unravel their own mysteries and those of others. However, Jonah remains haunted by a disturbing vision - a great test is coming. Will Jonah and Ralph succeed in their greatest challenge? Suitable for junior readers (5 - 10 year olds), read aloud to younger children or read alone.
