These are the stories behind the best-known characters in the Waverley novels - the men and women who inspired 'the novelist's art'.

In presenting them, Crockett drew on the 'vast amount of interesting material' that he originally collected with the aim of contributing annotations to Lockart's major biography of Sir Walter Scott.
