One of the most powerful religious institutions in medieval France, the Abbey of Saint-Victor, Marseille, stood at the centre of the intellectual, political and spiritual life in the European middle ages.

The two-volume Cartulary of the Abbey of Saint-Victor, first published in 1857, collects the abbey's charters dating from the seventh to the fourteenth centuries.

These documents provide especially valuable insight into the abbey's history prior to 1000 CE, and bear witness to the influence of an institution whose possessions extended as far as Syria and Spain.

They offer a wealth of information concerning the abbey's economic, diplomatic, and political history.

This edition, newly available again to scholars, includes both the 'large' and 'small' cartularies together with additional documents.
