This 1884 volume republishes articles that first appeared in magazines prior to Eliot's fame as a novelist. Eliot herself selected and edited the articles prior to her death. Included as well are a number of "e;notes"e; written by Eliot for later expansion in her novels or simply to develop an idea for its own sake.
