This is the first of three planned volumes which will catalogue the miniatures in the Royal Collection. It covers the period between the reigns of George I and William IV. The volume includes miniatures and enamels by Zinke and Liotard, commissioned by George II, Queen Caroline and their son Frederick Prince of Wales; the splendid collection of miniatures by Meyer, Miles, Smart and Ozias Humphrey; the magnificent portraits by Cosway, Henry Bone and Grimaldi, collected by the Prince Regent; the Coburg portraits brought into the Royal Collection by Prince Albert, who, together with Queen Victoria herself, first classified and catalogued the collection of miniatures as we know it today. The history of the Collection's formation is set out in the introduction.
