A norm-referenced communication assessment tool, "EMCS" focuses specifically on measuring young children's motor control and identifying impairments that may lead to a speech delay or disorder.

Developed for use with children between 8 and 30 months of age, this concise assessment can also be used with children up to 72 months of age who exhibit atypical speech, motor, or cognitive development.

Speech language pathologists and early interventionists can use the motor control profile generated by "EMCS" to guide additional communication assessment, plan intervention goals, and chart changes over time."EMCS" is straightforward and easy to use.

Professionals conduct a 15- to 20-minute Behavior Sample, watching as the child and a caregiver engage in natural interactions using familiar play materials and books. Gathering observation data on a simple form, professionals assess: arm and hand control, including pointing, grasping, stacking, and taking objects with one or both hands; motor speech control, including movements of the jaw, face, lips, and tongue; abnormal structure/function, including jaw sliding, abnormal posture, excessive drooling, and asymmetrical facial structure; and, after finishing the easy scoring form in about 10 minutes, professionals will have a complete picture of speech-related motor control - information they can use as a starting point for further assessment and intervention."EMCS" includes a manual with standardization and norming data and clear instructions for administering, scoring, and interpreting the tool; the forms for conducting and scoring the Behavior Sample; two training videos on sampling and scoring; and a toy kit with all of the materials needed for the Behavior Sample. It is perfect for use with the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales Developmental Profile (CSBS DP)!

Using "EMCS" in tandem with CSBS DP gives professionals more specific, in-depth information on a child's communication and motor development.
