The wonderful historic quilts found in museums - and in Patricia Cox's own collection of quilts - are not only examples of superb workmanship but were often created using very complex motifs and patterns.

Although the workmanship can still be duplicated today, the designs themselves are often too busy for modern tastes, or too time-consuming to replicate exactly.

Patricia Cox has taken a series of antique quilts as her source material and has used them to create a range of new designs, which have elements from the original but are updated and simplified to look more contemporary.

At the beginning of the book there is comprehensive step-by-step information on all the basic applique techniques needed.

Each new quilt is then featured with its source quilt alongside the new design, with each design introducing a different aspect of quilting and applique.

The template for one block is included with a step-by-step sequence to illustrate a specific technique.

More complex designs also feature the template for the entire quilt.

Maggi McCormick Gordon supplies her renowned knowledge of the history of quiltmaking, and informative text on the techniques needed to make each project. When completed, each new quilt will be a treasured item and an heirloom for generations to come.
