I Heard Two Hippopotami is a narrative poem about a child who comes upon two hippos talking in a river. The child hears the male hippo telling the female hippo she is fat, slow, clumsy, muddy, and loud- which doesn't seem nice. The child is worried the hippos will fight, but the female hippo's response surprises the child.

The book includes beautiful illustrations and an educational section, providing information about hippos, language, the book's theme, and vocabulary words used in the poem.
