Students come to appreciate the diverse peoples and landscapes of Western North America through ten engrossing autobiographical excerpts that are used as jumping-off points to further explore Western motifs and themes.

Each chapter features the excerpt, a short biography, bibliography and electronic references sections, and several learning experiences.

Focusing on reading, writing, speaking, geography, and multi-media reporting skills, many of the language arts and social studies activities place students in real-life situations with measurable outcomes.
