Begun in 1295, Beaumaris Castle was the last in a strategic network of great fortresses built across Wales by King Edward I (1272-1307) after Caernarfon, Conwy and Harlech in 1283.

It was built following a widespread Welsh revolt in 1294-95, during which time the defences of Edward's trio of castles were put to the test.
