Fine silks, muslin and wools, delicate embroidery, vibrant colors and intricate gold and gem-studded jewelry all illustrate an epic 5,000-year history littered with invaders and empires, kings, and religion-momentous events that have helped shape Indian and Sri Lankan dress. "India and Sri Lanca" explores the costume and culture of both countries and examines the influences that have made Indian costume and textiles the most recognizable and admired in the world, including: the history and culture of the mysterious ancient Harrapans; the golden age of Indian culture, presided over by the Guptas, the rise of Islam, and British rule; and, the influence of some of the world's greatest religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam.
