See all formats and editions

This book provides a library programme for encouraging reading in students aged 11-14.

Drawing on her long experience as a school librarian, the author focuses on the goal of promoting free voluntary reading through innovative workshops, staff training, collection development and collaborative curricular planning.

The author discusses the goal of reviving the interest in reading that is often lost by the middle years of childhood.

Her goal of "reviving readers" centres on the use of interesting library literacy programming to pique students' flagging interest in reading for pleasure.

Chapters focus on how to use the school's calendar and curriculum to get the time needed for the focused programme as well as ways to manipulate budgets, get grants and other monies to build a strong literature-oriented programme and collection.

One chapter focuses entirely on how to persuade teaching staff to become readers of young adult and children's literature in order to become models for their students.

Other programmes discussed are author visits, book fairs, whole school reading programmes, journal-writing for readers and much more.

Also included is an annotated bibliography of great reads.
