One Day We had to Run tells the stories of three children who were forced to become refugees. They fled from Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia, leaving their families and homes, and faced many dangers before they reached the safety of refugee camps in Kenya. There they met the author Sybella Wilkes who encouraged them and many others in the camp to tell their difficult stories.

Initially, many children many expressed their feelings by recounting fairytales from their homelands, some of which can be found in the book. Many found it easier to express themselves through paintings that have since been exhibited around the world.
