Dickens wrote many small pieces for the journals he edited, often taking something of the character of the sketch or familiar essay, now a Victorian genre largely neglected.

These two volumes collect those he wrote for his first journal; many are collaborative but all are here presented entire.

This second volume also includes two samples of his commissioning letters to collaborators on multi-author projects for Household Words.
