This guidance covers facilities for the delivery of emergency care within an A&E department in an acute general hospital, and is based on the 'see and treat' best practice model.

The standards set out in the guidance apply mainly to new-build facilities, but the principles are equally applicable to upgrades of existing accommodation or for new accommodation constructed within an existing building.

It covers general and specific design considerations in patient and support areas, as well as general functional and design requirements, engineering services and cost information.
