EMTREE provides a powerful tool to classify the content of biomedical information in a structured way that facilitates comprehensive searching and high precision retrieval by database users.EMTREE 2006 currently comprises 52,500 preferred terms of which more than 25,000 are drugs and chemicals, and 210,000 synonyms with almost 133,000 drugs and chemicals.

The 2006 edition incorporates several enhancements, such as the addition of 2,637 preferred terms.

Examples of new preferred terms are 'belimumab' 'solabegron' and 'ischemic preconditioning'.
