Units of Study for Primary Writing

Each Unit of Study covers approximately four weeks of instruction.

They provide the strategies, lesson plans, and tools you'll need to jump in and teach writing to your students in powerful, lasting ways.

Presented sequentially, these units take your children from oral and pictorial story telling, through emergent and into fluent writing. 1 Launching the Writing Workshop Whether you have taught in a writing workshop for years or are just learning the term, this book will offer you a plan for organizing and beginning the writing workshop. 2 Small Moments: Personal Narrative Writing In this unit children learn to take the everyday events of their lives and make them into focused, well-structured stories through pictures and through more and more writing. 3 Writing for Readers: Teaching Skills and Strategies In this unit of study children focus on and refine their command of the conventions of language.

Children learn to make their writing readable. 4 The Craft of Revision Good writing deserves to be revised.

This unit teaches children both how and why to revise their work. 5 Authors as Mentors This unit teaches children that they can learn to be better writers through studying the work of the authors they love. 6 Nonfiction Writing: Procedures and Reports In this unit, children learn how to write two different kinds of nonfiction texts: How- To and All-About books. 7 Poetry: Powerful Thoughts in Tiny Packages In this study of poetry writing, much of the instruction is designed to help children explore and savor language.
