Willie Carlin has been on the run now for 15 years, and lives in constant fear of being tracked down and assassinated by the IRA.

He has worked as a spy for MI5 but has also been politically dedicated to Sinn Fein, and has worked closely with both Martin McGuinness and Mitchel McLaughlin. In 1974, Carlin was discharged from the British Army and recruited into MI5.

Following his work with them for six years, he left and began a rapid rise up the ranks of the Republican Movement.

He witnessed RUC atrocities and survived an attempt on his life by the SAS.

But he also witnessed the murder of a local businessman, the killing of a Catholic mother by the IRA and vote rigging by Sinn Fein - which pushed his loyalties back in the direction of Military Intelligence.

His crossed allegiances caused him great distress and, he says: "It was as if I had no mind of my own and there were times when I believed I was mad.""Divided Loyalties" highlights the complexities of the divisions and struggles that the Republican movement went through in order to bring about peace in Northern Ireland.

Over the years, Carlin and McLaughlin influenced Martin McGuinness away from winning the war, and closer towards winning elections, gaining him a seat in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

This is an insider's account of the complexities of the Troubles and of the consequences of a life on the run.
