THIS VOLUME in the United States Capitol Historical Society's Perspectives on the American Revolution series explores how the architecture of the Capitol is imbued with the political culture of its time.

Editor Donald R. Kennon writes, "Just as the constitutional framework for the new nation adapted and reformulated classical theories of republicanism, so too would the creation of its capital.

The classical past would serve as models, but as models to be worked out in the context of the new American experiment in republicanism." These essays emanated from the syposium held by the Society in 1993 to commemorate the bicentennial of the laying of the cornerstone of the United States Capitol.
