This book presents essays by leading writers and academics examining the staging of Greek drama. "Rebel Women" is a collection of twelve essays by leading academics, writers and theatre practitioners examining the representation of ancient Greek heroines in their original contexts and on today's stage.

Combining studies of modern productions with essays on the original works, it is divided into three sections: international productions, Irish versions, and analysis of the original texts.

Many of the articles consider how such female characters have been portrayed in the twentieth century and in some cases have been transformed to enhance their relevance to topical and local situations and/or to strengthen and make more appealing their personalities and their actions.

The book illustrates that in searching for appropriate strong female characters contemporary theatre directors and dramatists have often turned to Greek tragedy and comedy.

This is a collection of essays by distinguished roster of leading academics, practitioners and writers including Nobel Prize winner Seamus Heaney that is published in association with Trinity College, Dublin in honour of Marianne McDonald. It has a crossover appeal to students of theatre and classics, and theatre practitioners.
